Transform Your Cold Bay Windows
Achieve Up to 50% Thermal Uplift
Old bay windows and solid walls are among the biggest cause for heat loss and black mould in old homes around Warwickshire
At SD Roberts Plastering & Wall Insulation, we specialise in bay window insulation solutions for homes in Coventry and Warwickshire and can offer a number of systems to fix these drafty culprits.
Did you know that uninsulated bay windows can account for up to 50% of heat loss in older properties? Not only does this increase your energy bills, but it can also lead to damp, mould problems, and an uncomfortable home environment.
SD Roberts Plastering & Wall Insulation
Your Local Experts in Bay Window Insulation and Solid Wall Heat Loss Solutions
For more than 20 years we have been installing high quality insulation and retrofit solutions into ageing and poorly insulated homes around Warwickshire.
Bay windows make up a large part of our work because in old homes with no insulation these bay windows are literally sucking heat and are extremely thermally inefficient which often results in damp problems.
Our tailored retrofit solutions are designed to improve thermal efficiency, reduce draughts, and eliminate condensation issues, giving you a home that's warmer, healthier, and more energy-efficient.
Timber Frame & Tile
Oriel style projected bays usually have no insulation between the timber stud and tile nor do they offer any kind of draft seal within the fabric and so these bays are particularly cold and a common problem being the build up of black spot mould due to condensation forming on the interior surface.
Another problem with this structure is the transfer of airborne sound and traffic noise which can easily penetrate through into the home due to lack of mass and insulation materials.
Rooms with this style of bay will be extremely cold through winter and difficult to heat up as shown in the case study video below many customers try to draft proof the bays themselves using weather strips, sealants and fleece lined wallpaper unfortunately this approach will not raise the thermal resistance of the bay enough and so cold and condensation problems persist.
Solid brick & render
Old homes with solid walls and cracked render are particularly prone to cold and damp problems. Without insulation, solid walls and brick built bay windows provide little resistance to heat loss, making these homes colder and less energy-efficient. Just like timber and tile built bays the interior cold surfaces can lead to condensation, especially in winter, creating the perfect environment for damp and mould growth.
Cracked render exacerbates the problem by allowing rainwater to penetrate the walls. Over time, this moisture gets trapped, worsening the damp issue. In extreme cases, this can compromise the structural integrity of the bay and lead to further deterioration.
Addressing these issues involves repairing damaged render, adding internal wall insulation, and ensuring proper ventilation to reduce condensation. Taking these steps not only improves comfort but will save on heating costs in a big way.
Mould and Damp..
Black mould on old bay windows is typically caused by a combination of moisture, poor ventilation and a lack of insulation. Here's a breakdown of the main causes:
1. Condensation
Bay windows often have less insulation than other walls, especially in older properties. This leads to cold surfaces where warm, humid air condenses.
Persistent condensation creates a damp environment, perfect for mold growth.
2. Poor Ventilation
Inadequate airflow in the bay area traps moisture. This is common in spaces with heavy curtains, furniture close to the windows, or blocked vents.
3. Penetrating damp
Gaps in window frames, deteriorated seals, shot mortar beds or render, high ground levels.. All can allow rainwater to seep into the bay and begin to create damp issues inside.
Wooden window frames that absorb moisture can exacerbate the problem.
4. Insufficient Insulation
Older bay windows lack proper insulation, causing cold spots where mould thrives.
Thermal bridging (cold spots caused by heat transfer through materials) can also contribute.
5. Exterior Issues
Blocked or damaged gutters and downpipes can lead to water infiltration and penetrating damp.
Cracks or gaps in exterior masonry can let moisture penetrate the walls around the window.
6. High Indoor Humidity
Activities like cooking, showering, or drying clothes indoors increase humidity, especially if there isn’t adequate extraction or ventilation. Moisture inside the home is attracted to the coldest surfaces and in most cases this will be poorly insulated bay windows.
